As children, my brother, sisters, and I played in the woods on the mountain that this cabin sits on. As a child, I always dreamed of having a log cabin in the woods. At the age of 46, my dream was fulfilled and I had my log cabin in the woods on grandfather's mountain! This log cabin sits on 3 acres, of an original 24 acre farm, purchased in 1942, by my Grandfather, George Washington England. He left his 8 children equal parts of his farm upon his death, so that each of them would have a piece of land on which to build a home. This particular parcel of land grandfather left to his oldest daughter, Melba (England) Henderson. Jobs were hard to find here back in the 'old days' so, after graduation from high school, Melba left to take a job in Baltimore, Maryland. While working there she met 'the love of her life', Merl Henderson. After getting married, they moved to Pennsylvania, Merl's home state. They raised two fine sons in Houston, Pennsylvania. After Merl's retirement, he built this log cabin for his wife Melba on her 'homeland'. It was finished in the early part of 1979. Merl was a meticulous type of person who wanted to do things right. To Melba's delight, he fulfilled her dream to 'have a log cabin in the woods'. They lived a joyous and happy retirement in this log cabin. My uncle, Merl Henderson, went to be with the Lord in September of 1990. Aunt Melba continued to live in the cabin happily until September of 1999. At the age of 76 years, after a period of declining health, she felt it would be better for her to live closer to one of her sons. I acquired the treasured log cabin and land. After I became owner, I wanted other people to enjoy this log cabin and its surroundings, along with the many memories we shared as a family. Aunt Melba was thrilled with my decision to preserve the log cabin and keep this part of her father's farm in the family. She continues to do well and is still enjoying her retirement. My wife and I have changed very little of Melba and Merl's cabin. We have however changed the name to 'Dale's Log Cabin'. We felt this to be appropriate as we offered this cabin to our guests. I am the third generation to hold this land . As a guest of ours, we want you to enjoy this log cabin and its surrounding mountain property as if it were your own, and also to help us preserve it for others to enjoy. We hope this short history will give you a better understanding of our cabin and land. |
